How can I do that?

I think combining classical skills(drawing, painting, 3d modeling, printmaking with the new media making little Movies, or combining art and science ideas and practice. (Math and Art, Makerspace, etc)

I would like to combine the ISTE Standards from students to become a creative communicator with my abilities to be a collaborator.

The students will be encouraged to choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.

  •  Based on your goals, which stackable certificates have you chosen to pursue?

Based on the goals I choose to take the classic certificate, however, I am not sure if I shouldn’t have taken the one with credits to have more acknowledgment for the work that we are doing.

  • How will your goals impact teaching & learning in your day-to-day context?

I will choose the right resources and plan more intentionally for specific learning experiences.

Who might you need to ask for support to successfully reach your goals?

I don’t know yet.

On twitter:)!

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to let you know that I am having now an account on twitter. It is the first time when I am using this. I hope I will get around. I hope I can still be creative and know when to switch from the “silent observer” to the active communicator. (maybe I could become an acronymous person). Keep in touch! Simona

And my name on twitter is Simona ArtsEd.

COETAIL# Week 2: Becoming a Researcher

Reading the information in the article, The State of the World’s Children – Children in a Digital World (Unicef) I was surprised to learn that:

“African youth are the least connected. Around 60 percent are not online, compared with just 4 percent in Europe.” I was not aware that so many people from Africa are at such a disadvantage. That is truly unfair.

I was also surprised that so many young people in Europe are using the internet so intensively. I often visit Europe and I thought that people are more connected with nature and they prefer to meet with their friends and relatives directly than to have interaction with digital media. I have been living in S. Korea since 2013. I believe that in Asia the children are so much more used with electronic devices. Their lifestyle is different.

India’s internet has a massive gender problem—and it’s holding girls back”

“India ‘s internet has a massive gender problem,” says Ananya Bhattacharya in Quarz Website.

I found it very sad also the fact that in India there is gender inequality.

“There is a digital gender gap as well. Globally, 12 percent more men than women used the internet in 2017. In India, less than one-third of internet users are female.“ That shouldn’t be happening in our society anymore.

Participation with New Media

One of our favorite family media entertainment

Regarding “The Media and Mediation between Generation”( from the text: Living with New Media (John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation) I resonate with this way of communication between parents and children playing computer games together. Making it easier to feel closer and open to the interests of your children. In the beginning, I was quite skeptical about this attitude but I wanted to connect more with my children too, and because I love dancing I bought the # computer game for the switch device #Just Dance and we are enjoying it very much during the weekends.

Another famous computer game in South Korea is Brawl Stars, which my children love and I like very much the character ”Poco”. He is shooting with the power of singing, which I found so magical, with his music beam and light brawls balls with music.

How will you actively seek out knowledge instead of letting it come to you?

I will try to subscribe to important educational websites and blogs and follow up with the inspiring teachers that I like. I will have better keywords and hints on how to research. I will search with Educational Google tools. I will ask more questions to my colleagues.

How might being an active researcher impact your practice?

Being an active researcher will broaden the horizons of my knowledge, being well informed and making the best choices for those classes that I am teaching to my students and make me feel more confident. I will feel more connected to my colleagues with whom I would ask for advice.

Other questions that arose in this UNIT are:

From Lurker to Connector

From Lurker to Connector

After reading so many insightful thoughts in this 1st Unit from “Lurker to Connector” I got immediately the taste of becoming a connector.

I used immediately the tag of COETAIL and tried to connect to the Facebook group and I am thinking which online platform might be best to use because there are so many choices outside that I didn’t know about it.

I was very keen to read the posts of Mrs. Cofino and she was suggesting the following:

“ Join a Social Network

We’ve all heard of MySpace and Facebook, and while those are great ways to connect with friends and colleagues, an even better place to start is a social network with a focus, like Ning. There are quite a few networks on Ning that center around teaching and learning. Here are a few of my favorites:

So I will check one by one and see what is suitable for me.

Also the article which I was so eager to read and check all the other links:”First Steps Toward Becoming a 21st Century Educator (Cofino)” gives me great resources and I need some more time to explore this.

I was very fascinated by the first text of Mr.Utech when he was questioning what does it mean to disconnect. This was a very good question which is resonating with me at the moment:

“I’m sitting here in my very quiet house eating dinner, no TV, no radio, just me my cat and this blog post. Am I disconnected?”Utech

I think for me it’s hard to be disconnected because I have many parallel platforms online, where I am keeping in touch with the artists around the world and with my teaching profession, mostly via email, where I should be reachable most of the time.

Another good point of Mr. Utech was:

“Are you consuming, using or creating with technology?’

What we really mean when we say “Kids need to have balance” or “I need to disconnect” isn’t really about disconnecting, I would argue, but rather about being less of a consumer.”

I was also impressed by the article” Living with New Media” (John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation) which totally opened my mind.

A struggle which I tried to have with my own children every day. But with this article, I could have more understanding for them that nowadays the children build social skills in this way as well and they are more pushed to use those media than we used to do it in our childhood.

A very good question from Mr. Utech was:

“How much time do I spend consuming vs creating?”

That makes me think for myself to try to make my own graf. I might come back later to this point.

Speaking about consuming first because we have to get inspired first,

I liked very much Mr. Bevans tag about “#playfullearning” and the connection with Maker Space learning because it’s a good link about how we could combine design and technology. A great resource for me to get inspired by and think what is the difference between “Maker Space” and “Art Class”.

We had last week’s Global Play Day and we celebrated this event for the first time in our school. We gave the students the total agency to play free and be creative and I was amazed to see how dedicated they were building dollhouses and their own stories in a cardboard challenge type of project. Also, some other children are coming with Rubikcubes and exchange ideas about how to solve them, using algorithms and mathematical skills. Another great way of using creativity with abstract thinking.

Hello world!

Hello everyone!!!:)

My name is Simona Schultz and I am originally from Romania.

I am currently living & working: South Korea, International School Busan(ISB) with my two children and my husband.

  • Position: PYP Art Teacher in the Elementary School and ELC
  • Cohort: 12
  • Twitter: NOT yet.
  • I am also an independent visual artist with my born name, Simona Soare, which I am still using as an artist name. I am travelling a lot around the world(Osaka, Berlin, South Korea, etc). I graduated Master in Fine Arts(Art in Context in UdK) in 2007 and I lived 10 years in Berlin, before I came to South Korea in summer 2013. Berlin is a place which I still call home and every summer I go to visit and work as an artist there.

Why did you decide to begin your COETAIL journey?

I decided to begin my COETAIL journey because I felt the need to make a meaningful learning/teaching experience. I have been teaching for two years at ISB, South Korea  and sometimes I have the feeling that I would need more active effective knowledge to apply in my teaching practice- regarding classroom management and how to improve my skills using technology in my work. I have so many art skills to share with my students but I feel I need better strategies to communicate my knowledges. Because I am the only art teacher in PYP I feel sometimes isolated and trapped in between planning meetings and directly teaching from ELC to PYP.

I love collaborating, connecting and exchanging ideas and experiences with my colleagues. I think it is a winn for everyone sharing experiences and creating something together.

Why now? What or who inspired you to join this cohort?

I was inspired by two friends of mine Andrea Khambalia and  Amanda McCloskey, truely amazing teacher who highly recommended me to join COETAIL because it was one of the best learning experiences that they had ever had as educators. With Andrea, I collaborate directly in a theater play production and it was an amazing experience. And with Amanda I am collaborating on different units in our PYP curriculum.

What are you most looking forward to over the next 3 semesters? Is there anything else you’d like to share with the COETAIL community?

In the next 3 semester I am looking forward to get updated with the last century pedagogical concepts from inspiring educators around the world. I am looking forward to learn effective strategies of communicating with my students. To feel more confident when I am teaching, to communicate more easily the content of a lesson to my students. I wish that the students are listening to me for a longer period of time, are working independently and are cleaning up nicely, whithout making me to raise my voice .

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the COETAIL community?

I think we have a very beautyful and important mission as educators to pass the best knowledge that we have to the future generation, but how can we make this experience most enjoyable and meaningful for everyone?

Please be patient with me because I am comming from an artist backround and I am still polishing my writting skills and my skills how to use technology in my everyday practice. I am more used with the paint and brush and other tools to express myself.:)

I have recently had a minor surgery (came last night from hospital) and I am trying to catch up with you asap. Thank you so much for your understanding.

I am looking forward to an amazing learning journey with passionate and inspiring teachers around the world.
